Global efforts to promote responsible mica sourcing have historically centred on India and Madagascar. However, the mica supply chain is global, complex, and often opaque. To better understand systematic risks and exploitative practices throughout the mica global supply chain, the Responsible Mica Initiative (RMI) commissioned Embode to conduct two desk-based assessments on social risks linked to mica extraction and transformation in Brazil and Malaysia.
Methodology & Objective
Embode leveraged its extensive experience in identifying human rights risks in global supply chains to conduct a desk review on the social risk assessments in Brazil and Malaysia. The objective was to provide a first documentary review to identify the salient social risks, mapping potential human rights impact to inform future investigations. The finding informed RMI’s ongoing discussions and decisions on due diligence activities in Brazil and Malaysia.
These preliminary findings have laid the groundwork for field visits in 2026 and beyond, in which targeted supply chain assessment will be conducted to better understand labour conditions, environmental risks and community-level impacts at mica extraction and processing sites.
